A new artificial diet for the early weaning of seabass (<i>Dicentrarchus labrax</i>) larvae OMA

The weaning of marine fish larvae is a critical step in larval rearing. The successful transition from live food to an artificial feed depends among others on the quality of the dry feed used (e.g. freshness of ingredients, digestibility, quality of the formulation) and the larvae themselves (e.g. age, behaviour towards artificial diets, development of the digestive tract, efficiency of certain metabolic pathways). The present study shows the results obtained with a new artificial diet formulated for the weaning phase of marine fish larvae (<i>Dicentrarchus labrax</i>) in commercial hatcheries.

A new test system is described for the evaluation of toxic levels of liposoluble products in the aquatic food chain using <i>Artemia</i> and <i>Mysidopsis bahia</i> (M.) as experimental animals. For this, freshly released juveniles (<24h old) of <i>M. bahia</i> are transferred to the experimental bioassay test system, cultured under standard conditions and fed 24h old purposely contaminated <i>Artemia</i> nauplii. After 11 days, data on survival, reproductive characteristics, individual length and dry weight are recorded and treated statistically.

An intensive approach to Atlantic halibut fry production OMA

The larval stage is regarded to be the main bottleneck of halibut production. Halibut eggs were obtained from captive broodstock both by stripping and by natural spawning. Artificial photoperiods were used to increase the total spawning season. Yolk sac larvae are presently produced either in small stagnant units or in large flow through systems. A major consideration is to avoid stress of the larvae, caused by mechanical disturbances of the larvae and by high bacterial load or high ammonia levels in the water.The experimentation showed that halibut larvae began to ingest algae earlier than rotifers <i>Brachionus</i> sp. Automation in stock-culture maintenance and juvenile separation of the mysid <i>Mysidopsis bahia</i> (Molenonck) OMA

A batch system with subgravel filter for stock-culture maintenance of <i>Mysidopsis bahia</i> in artificial sea water is described. The feeding of mysids on <i>Artemia</i> is optimized through the cyclic pumping of brine shrimp instar I nauplii from a refrigerator to the stock-cultures. An easily constructed incubator-separator apparatus is described for the standardized harvesting of mysid juveniles to be used as test organisms.

Characterization of brine shrimp <i>Artemia</i> from Cam Ranh Bay in Central Vietnam OMA

<i>Artemia</i> cysts collected from inoculation experiments in Cam Ranh salterns are evaluated for their potential use in aquaculture. Cyst biometrics, hatching quality, naupliar fatty acid profile and naupliar growth were measured and compared to reference <i>Artemia</i> strains. Cyst characteristics reveal that the parthenogenetic strain (PR China) used in inoculations, was eliminated from the environment and that the remaining brine shrimp are likely to be composed of Macau and Great Salt Lake <i>Artemia</i> strains, and of their cross-breds. Characterization of <i>Artemia</i> from different localities in Tunisia with regard to their use in local aquaculture OMA

<i>Artemia</i> cysts have been collected from different saltworks and natural salt lakes in Tunisia. The cyst material was processed and used for the following characterization analyses: cyst and naupliar biometrics, cyst hatching characteristics, fatty acid pattern of the nauplii, nutritional value of the nauplii for mysid shrimp, naupliar growth rate and temperature resistance, mode of reproduction, and characterization of sibling species. The cross-breeding tests and cyst biometrics reveal that only <i>Artemia tunisiana</i> occurs in Tunisia. Although quality improvements may be expected through improved harvesting, Tunisian <i>Artemia</i> have acceptable hatching characteristics and are a good food for mysid shrimp....

A standardized bioassay is described for the nutritional evaluation of <i>Artemia</i> nauplii and metanauplii using juvenile <i>Mysidopsis bahia</i>. This test is particularly suited to evaluate the dietary value of different strains and batches of <i>Artemia</i> . International study on <i>Artemia</i> : 24. Cold storage of live <i>Artemia</i> nauplii from various geographical sources: potentials and limits in aquaculture OMA

Freshly-hatched <i>Artemia</i> nauplii from various geographical sources survived storage in a refrigerator (2-4°C) at densities of 2000 per ml and above. Except for <i>Artemia</i> from Chaplin Lake and Buenos Aires, naupliar viability was very high even after 48 h storage, and did not decrease significantly after a 24 h post-storage transfer to 25°C. Neither the naupliar dry weight nor biochemical composition changed significantly during refrigeration for most strains tested. Comparative culture-tests with stored and freshly-hatched nauplii as food for juvenile marine mysids <i>Mysidopsis bahia</i> M. and larval carp <i>Cyprinus carpio</i> L. revealed similar production performances.

International study on <i>Artemia</i> : 29. Nutritional evaluation of <i>Artemia</i> nauplii from different geographical origin for the marine crustacean <i>Mysidopsis bahia</i> OMA

Freshly hatched nauplii from reference <i>Artemia</i> and from 3 other <i>Artemia</i> strains were tested for their effects on survival, growth and reproductive characteristics of the crustacean <i>Mysidopsis bahia</i> (M.). The reference, French (Lavalduc) and Chinese (Tientsin) strains produced significantly better results for all criteria tested than the Canadian strain (Chaplin Lake). Results are discussed together with those reported for other predators.

International study on <i>Artemia</i> : 33. Promising results in larval rearing of <i>Penaeus stylirostris</i> using a prepared diet as algal substitute and for <i>Artemia</i> enrichment OMA

The importance of highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) such as 20:5omega3 and 22:6omega3 has been investigated for the larvae of the blue shrimp <i>Penaeus stylirostris</i>. HUFA-rich or HUFA-enriched <i>Artemia</i> nauplii yielded higher production results in the hatchery than HUFA-poor <i>Artemia</i> especially when yeast was used as a substitute for algae during the early larval stages. Best results were obtained when a HUFA-rich formulated diet was used as a supplement to the yeast and as an enrichment for the <i>Artemia</i> nauplii. Differences in production results could be attributed to the HUFA content in living and non-living larval diets.

Manipulated yeast diets as a partial algal substitute for rearing bivalve molluscs: laboratory trials with <i>Tapes semidecussata</i> OMA

The development of a cost-effective algal substitute would greatly reduce operating costs of bivalve hatcheries and has therefore been the subject of many studies. Previous work has resulted in the development of a yeast diet with improved digestibility and nutritional composition. Preliminary trials showed that this diet can substitute up to 80% of the algal diet in the seed culture of the Manila clam <i>Tapes semidecussata</i>. The biochemical composition of fish eggs is often used as an indicator for assessing the nutritional requirements of aquaculture species during their larval stages. Fatty acids of the (n-3) HUFA type have proven to play a critical role in providing good growth, survival and stress resistance in marine fish larvae. Hence, analyzing these fatty acids in fish eggs may provide interesting data on the requirements for those essential nutrients. By comparing the analyses of wild versus broodstock fish eggs differences may appear, possibly explaining differences in egg quality. A research program was carried out to improve and facilitate rotifer (<i>Brachionus plicatilis</i>) culturing as well as to assure their optimal nutritional quality as a prey, concentrating on the development of a dry and complete rotifer diet that does not require the use of algae and does result in a HUFA rich <i>Brachionus</i>. Freshly hatched San Pablo Bay and Great Salt Lake <i>Artemia</i> nauplii (omega-3-HUFA-poor) and enriched meta-nauplii (omega-3-HUFA-enriched)were compared to reference <i>Artemia</i> nauplii (omega-3-HUFA-rich) as a food source for the larvae of the sea bass, <i>Dicentrarchus labrax</i>. Significant differences in survival and biomass production between the treatments could be attributed to the omega-3-HUFA content of the food. A delayed mortality in fish larvae fed the Great Salt Lake <i>Artemia</i> is suspected to be caused by a high level of alpha-BHC in this <i>Artemia</i> source.
